“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 6:24)
Jesus spoke plainly about money because He knew its power to capture the heart. Mammon is more than money; it is the spirit that promises security, identity, and significance apart from God. A mature son refuses to bow to it.
God is not against His children having resources. He gives the power to get wealth so that His covenant can be established on the earth.
“But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” (Deuteronomy 8:18)
- Settle Who Your Master Is
Decide in your heart that God alone is Lord over your finances. Money must serve the Kingdom, not rule your decisions.
- Seek the Kingdom First
When the Kingdom comes first, provision follows. Order your priorities around God’s purposes.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
- Honour God with Your Substance
Giving is an act of worship and a declaration of trust. Give cheerfully and with a willing heart.
“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:” (Proverbs 3:9)
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)
- Be Faithful with Little
Faithfulness with money prepares you for greater responsibility in the Kingdom.
“If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?” (Luke 16:11)
- Guard Your Heart
It is not money but the love of money that leads people astray. Keep your heart content and your eyes on eternal things.
“For the love of money is the root of all evil…” (1 Timothy 6:10)
